Sharks Drop Two In Last Day of Saint Leo Tournament

Sharks go 1-3 on the weekend.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 St. Leo, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (11-12) dropped two tough games Sunday in the Saint Leo Tournament, falling to Lincoln Memorial, 5-4, and No. 6 Armstrong Atlantic, 6-2.

Game One

The Sharks scored three runs in the first inning to earn an early 3-0 lead. Back-to-back hits by Lorena Spaulding (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and Erika Garcia (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) set up the scoring play before Taylor Rotz (Fr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) came to bat. Rotz notched an RBI by singling to right field, allowing Spaulding to score and Garcia to advance to third. Katey Blummer (Fr., Naples, Fla.) singled to right field to bring Garcia home before Rotz scored a run on a LMU fielding error.

Meredith Johnson pathed the way for the Railsplitters to get their first runs in the game, doubling to right field and advancing Kirsten Toole to third. A RBI single to left field put the Railsplitters on the board at 3-1.

The Railsplitters tied the game at three in the top of the third on a wild pitch and two walks.

In the bottom of the third, Garcia hit a RBI double to left center, putting the Sharks back in the lead, 4-3.

The Sharks defense held the Railsplitters to one hit until the top of the seventh. A hit by LMU and a catching error by the Sharks gave the Railsplitters the two runs they needed to take the 5-4 lead and win the game.

Game Two

NSU and No. 6 Armstrong Atlantic faced each other for the second time this season, after the Sharks took the upset earlier this year.

Armstrong showed its pedigree early and recorded two homeruns and five RBI to take a 6-0 lead into the sixth.

The Sharks got on the board in the bottom of the frame. A single by Spaulding followed by a double by Garcia would set up the scoring run. With one out on the board, Gina Bondarenko (Sr., Pembroke Pines) grounded out to the shortstop, giving Spaulding enough time to score the run. Next at bat, Katrina Ammons (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) notched a RBI double, bringing Cogan home and cutting the Pirates lead to 6-2.

Armstrong would score one more before the game ended, taking the 7-2 win.

NSU will come back to Saint Leo this Friday, March. 14, to return to conference play at 7 p.m.
